Steps to Getting Your Driver License (teens under 18 years old):

1. Before going to DMV:
  • Complete this California Driver Education Online Course and get your official DMV Completion Certificate.
  • Make sure you have the Completion Certificate showing that you've completed California Driver Education Online, completed application form (DL-44) signed by your parent(s) or guardian(s), your verified social security number, verification of your birthdate and legal presence, and proof of enrollment in Driver Training.
   
2. At the DMV Office:
  • Take and pass the DMV Written Examination on traffic rules and signs. The examination is 46 questions long, and you must answer 39 correctly in order to pass. Our California Driver Education Online includes practice quizzes and exams designed to help you pass the written test.
  • Take and pass the DMV Vision Examination.
  • Give your thumb print.
  • Pay the $12.00 fee.
  • Receive your provisional permit (must be at least 15 1/2 years old).
   

3. After the DMV:

  • After passing the DMV Written Examination, you will need to take the first six hours of behind-the-wheel driver training with a professional driving instructor.
  • Complete 50 hours of driver training with your parents or adults 25-years or older, who hold valid California Driver Licenses.
  • Take and pass the DMV Driver Test.
  • Receive your provisional license (must be at least 16 years old).

1. Before going to DMV:

  • Complete your application form (DL-44), and make sure you have your verified social security number, verification of your birthdate and legal presence. You are not required to take California Driver Education, although we highly recommend you take our California Driver Education Online to be fully prepared for the DMV Written Examination. Our California Driver Education Online includes practice quizzes and exams designed to help you pass the DMV Written Examination, or you may sign up for our DMV Practice Exams Online.

2. At the DMV Office:

  • Take and pass the DMV Written Examination on traffic rules and signs. The examination is 36 questions long.
  • Take and pass the DMV Vision Examination.
  • Give your thumb print.
  • Pay the $24.00 fee.
  • Receive your provisional permit (if you have never been issued a license).
  • Receive your driver license if you have been issued one before.

3. After the DMV:

  • If you were issued a provisional permit, you may practice with any adult 25 years or older, holding a valid California Driver License.
  • Take and pass your Driver Test (you have three chances).
  • Receive your interim Driver License.
